Your First Tech Hire
A custom-tailored approach that guarantees success for role creation, hiring, onboarding, and supporting your first tech hire.
WHAT IT IS
A new(ish) way of developing your talent before they are even on staff.
For centuries, apprenticeships were the cornerstone of skill-building, allowing experienced professionals to pass on their expertise to the next generation. Today, we’re reviving this method, blending real-world experience with structured support to equip the next wave of non-profit data & tech social-justice warriors.
This service is for non-profits that recognize the need for a full-time staff member managing their data & technology. It is a 3-year commitment that will make a life-long impact on the culture of your organization.
HOW IT WORKS
Year One:
A non-profit data & tech expert mentor from Make Tech Work For You with 10+ years experience will work with executive leaders to build a strategy for creating the first data & technology role for your organization, including the job description, onboarding plans, management structure, and goals for the role. At the same time, our expert will serve in this role 65% part-time, iteratively improving on the role creation as well as iteratively improving the organization’s data & technology work and culture.
An apprentice will serve 35% part-time alongside the mentor, gaining knowledge, skills, and experience that are broad for data & technology but specific for your organization’s context and needs. The apprentice is on staff with Make Tech Work For You.
Year Two:
The apprentice now takes over in the role at 65%, having gained the foundations of what is needed to serve in this role through the program and built relationships with the organization’s team members. The apprentice remains on staff with Make Tech Work For You.
The mentor will continue to support the apprentice and to serve in the data & tech role at 35% time.
Year Three:
The permanent role becomes official for the organization and the apprentice is hired into this role at 100% time.
The mentor will continue to support the apprentice with monthly check-ins and additional guidance where needed.
